SMC Gets $200,000 for Energy-Reduction Efforts

The college received two rebate checks on Tuesday, thanks to its efforts to lighten SMC's carbon footprint.

Along with on the roof of a campus parking structure and implementing a new jobs program designed to help hundreds of individuals find work in eco-centric fields, the college has also been harvesting its green reputation by reducing SMC's carbon footprint.

Already, the college is reaping the rewards.

On Tuesday, the school's Board of Trustees received two rebate checks for its energy-reducing retrofit project: one from Southern California Edison; and another from The Gas Company, which is operated by Sempra Energy. The checks totaled $217,322.

The rebates were given in light of the college retrofitting the control system for the Science Building's 50-plus fume hoods. The 10-month, $175,000 project will save SMC an estimated $1.5 million over the next decade.

Incidentally, on Tuesday, Sempra also granted another check to an organization in Santa Monica. The company to the Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation to provide teacher materials and training related to the school district's implementation of the new Education and the Environment Initiative Curriculum.
