St. Monica Football Player Signs With Navy

Senior Sam Holguin recently signed his letter of intent to attend the academy in the fall.

senior Sam Holguin is going from Santa Monica to Annapolis: On Friday, the student athlete signed a letter of intent to play football for the United States Naval Academy in the fall.

“I look forward to my entire experience at the Naval Academy and especially playing Division 1 football,” Holguin said on Friday.

Holguin signed his letter of intent on the high school campus, with his parents, school administrators and coaching staff standing by in support.

This isn't the only headline Holguin has made as of late. Last week,  that he was one of two Mariners to make the 2010-11 All-CIF Southern Section team, as selected by the Football Coaches Association.

Last fall, Holguin had 37 receptions for 722 yards and five touchdowns, and rushed for 178 yards and two touchdowns. The 6' 3", 190-pound senior also played in two games at quarterback, completing 24 of 42 passes for 304 yards and one touchdown. As a defensive back, he had 13 solo tackles, three interceptions and two fumble recoveries.

“Sam has so many abilities; he can accomplish anything," Santa Monica Catholic Schools President said at the signing on Friday. "Right now, he’s committed his life to being an officer of the United States Navy to serve his country. We need strong young men like Sam to lead us. We are looking forward to rooting for him as he plays for Navy.”
