As event organizers explained what the gathered group of athletes was about to do, some of the competitors were in disbelief.

"Are you just experimenting on us?" one asked.

Twenty crossfit athletes came from around California for the WarriorZ Throwdown, an exhibition with cash prizes for winners held during Sunday's Fittest of Elk Grove event.

"I love watching the hometown folks, but you can't say you don't enjoy the pro folks as well," Elk Grove City Council Member Steve Detrick said.

The athletes, who were paired off in randomly assigned teams, performed feats even they seemed amazed by, including a bizarre set of pushups on rings suspended from a squatting partner.

San Jose resident Garret Fisher said the event was unique.

"I got to work with somebody I [had] never met," Fisher said. "It was different. Usually I train with the same people every day."

Santa Cruz resident Annie Sakamoto said that aspect of the event was what attracted her.

Chad Augustin, a former Elk Grove resident who recently moved to Sacramento, said the event was also unique in another way.

"Everybody is here with no ego, just having fun."

The winning teams were:

1st (tie) –  Jenny LaBaw & Chad Augustin

1st (tie) –  Blair Morrison & Sarah Hopping

3rd – Ben Alderman & Becca Voigt

Note: The two first-place teams tied because of a judging error, Event Director Brian Detrick said.

Charlie Zamora at Warriorz is one of the nicest people you can meet. He is extremely knowledgable about "cross fit" and is wonderful with younger athletes (high school) that he trains!

If he is so knowledgeable why did he come up with two movements that are very dangerous and stupid? That ring push up hanging off the neck of your parent is the worst thing I have ever seen in a comp. Someone could really gotten hurt. You had elite athletes doing this and their crossfit career was hanging in the balance of someone they did not know as their partner. Then HSPU without a wall very dangerous. Again your trusting a person you never worked out with before to catch your legs and feet with a plate. Then the ones that kip? you better have good timing.

HSPU, not safe I guess the same goes for OHS, or DL, or ..... hmmm just about everyother move in CF. A WOD could induce a heart attack.... I have walked into my box and have done partner wod's with people I don't know including handstand walk/work. I am an amature.... I think that would be more risky because I would be more proned to making a mistake due to not having proper body awareness or strenght and letting pride get in my way. I spoke to some of the athletes and the ones I did thought that was a pretty fun and cool movement. I did not speak to all of them, in fact I have pictures of several of them laughing and putting thumbs signs. Risky yes possibly, but so are other movements that we do on a daily basis in CF.

All I know is he is the only gym in Elk Grove that is licensed to train people. Most personal trainers are just people who like to work out and needed a job. My son works with him and has for qhite some time and I am very comfortable with that arrangement. He is also trusted by several of the local high school coaches to train their athletes as well? you don't just slip and fall into that type of curcumstance? Sounds like you have a beef with him? Perhaps you should give him a call at his gym and set up a time to discuss it and between the two of you you can figure out if his techniques are legit or not. Thanks for the concern though "john".

I'll have to agree that this was just for fun. the athletes had nothing to gain. they were good sports about the funky WODS. The athlete's are prepared to do anything. They live to train hard always. CF is only unsafe if you don't know what your doing.
