Pacifica Christian Baseball Falls in Finals

The Seawolves dropped the Division 7 title game to Animo Leadership on Saturday.

Having won the Heritage League crown and advanced to the championship game of the CIF Southern Section Division 7 playoffs, the baseball team had only one thing left to do: defeat Animo Leadership on Saturday at the University of California, Riverside.

The Seawolves had beaten Coast Union, Cate, Riverside Prep and Firebaugh on their way to the finals and were looking to end the season with one more victory. However, Pacifica Christian fell a little short, losing 6-4 to Animo Leadership of Inglewood.

Animo Leadership (22-5)—which had previously upset top-seeded in the quarterfinals–plated four runs in the first inning Saturday. Keenan Pierandozzi-Howes tripled to score a run, then scored himself in the second inning to get the Seawolves on the scoreboard.

The Aztec Eagles built a 6-2 lead after four innings, but Pacifica Christian pulled to within 6-4 in the fifth on Tucie Shelp's run-scoring single. However, Animo closer James Barraza struck out the side in the seventh inning. Though Pacifica Christian out-hit Animo 11-9, the Seawolves (13-6) couldn't overcome their early deficit.

With 14 of 15 varsity players returning next season, the Seawolves seem poised to make another deep run in the playoffs.
