Santa Monica Festival to Feature New Kid Friendly Bike Area

The workshop at the Santa Monica Festival will be led by the League of American Bicyclists Certified League Cycling Instructors.

A free kids bike skills workshop will part of the activities at the 22nd Annual Santa Monica Festival this Saturday, June 1.

The workshop, which will be hosted by Walk ‘n Rollers, focuses on essential bicycle handling and safety skills for children of all ages and will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

“Previously, families would come for the Festival and be surprised there were child-specific bicycle activities,” said Jim Shanman, founder of Walk ‘n Rollers. Shanman continues, “This year we’re making the Kids Bike area a destination unto itself. Our aim is to not only encourage children and families to bike more often, but do so safely and responsibly. Emphasizing the basics in a fun and engaging environment is a key element to that.”

Children will work in small groups to learn important bicycle safety lessons such as helmet fitting, recognizing and respecting traffic signals and stop signs and avoiding hazards.

There will be hourly drawings for free bicycle helmets, Polar water bottles, bicycle locks and more. Plus, all day, there will be a kids bike crafts table where kids can decorate their helmets and bikes and make their own race plate.

The workshops are lead by League of American Bicyclists Certified League Cycling Instructors. Bikes and helmets will be made available for those without.

Santa Monica Spoke and other organizations will be offering information and demonstrations for adult riders on bicycle commuting, repair tips and more throughout the day.
