SM Resident Wins 5K Race in Redondo Beach

Tania Fischer won the Super Bowl Sunday 5K with a time of 17 minutes and 43 seconds.

Tania Fischer, a Santa Monica resident, added to her list of running accomplishments by winning a Redondo Beach race on Sunday. She came out on top of the Super Bowl Sunday 5K with a time of 17 minutes and 43 seconds.

Fischer, 44, has won the Redondo race before, in 2008. During a post-race interview with Patch, she said that knowing the course helped.

“If you’re not careful, someone can catch you,” said Fischer, who built a large lead in the first two miles, before the course went downhill.

Despite having won previous races in her career, Fischer—the founder of the Janes, a small running club for women—said the thrill of victory doesn’t ever go away.

“Every time you get on the starting line, there’s always the hope,” Fischer said. “Every race, the books are cleared, and whoever is feeling good that day wins. That’s why I think people keep coming back to run. It’s such a personal journey.

“It doesn’t matter where you are. It could be a 30-minute 5K, but you’ve run 29 minutes, and so you are the hero for that day."
