BLOG: Creating a Family Summer

Summer is an excellent time to develop family rituals and traditions that can be passed down from generation to generation.

Each year, as Americans gear up for the grand ball-drop in Times Square, many take the time to do a self-evaluation on how the prior year went. People often ask themselves, “What changes do I need to make moving ahead,” “What should I leave behind me,” and “What do I want to accomplish going forward?” Sure, we all may do a great job of conducting an inventory of our achievements and missteps, but how often do we really build on these realizations beyond the winter months? This year, don’t wait until January to make resolutions for your family—take advantage of the summer months to strengthen your foundation at home!

Summer is an excellent time to develop family rituals and traditions that can be passed down from generation to generation. With the children out of school and vacations on the calendar, we are given the opportunity to spend a little extra quality time strengthening our core relationships. Memorial Day Weekend, Fourth of July, and Labor Day Weekend can be the perfect time to establish traditions and create lasting memories for your family.

Research shows that families who purposefully designate time together, whether it is playing ball in the yard, family dinnertime or just talking around the table, have healthier lives across the board. Children with consistent daily routines are seen to have better school performance and are more socially competent. Rituals and traditions are protective elements that serve as life anchors.
