YWCA, SM Commission Unveil Women's Partnership

Through the new group, women will be trained how to strengthen their engagement in the community.

The YWCA of Santa Monica announced Tuesday morning that it has established a new group for which women will be trained to volunteer with nonprofits and civic divisions. The Women's Partnership is cosponsored by the Santa Monica Commission on the Status of Women.

The Women's Partnership will lead off with three classes taking place in homes on the Westside. They will revolve around reading, writing and other forms of communication, as well as community engagement.

The first session will take place Apr. 2-3 and be led by the Great Books Foundation, a nonprofit educational organization. Participants will learn how to choose reading materials that stimulate conversation and how to facilitate discussion groups.

The second, called "Excavating Your Future," is a writing workshop that will take place Apr. 30-May 1. Hosted by UCLArts and Healing, it will teach women ways to write about their experiences and share their life stories through words.

The last session, "A Weekend of Thought and Action," will happen June 4-5 at the Coro Public Affairs Training Center in Los Angeles. It will revolve around working with members of the Santa Monica community on issues that pertain specifically to this city.

The classes are limited to 25, 15 and 21 participants, respectively. Each costs $80; if taken altogether, the fee is $200.
