Awkward Family Photos? Santa Monica's Got 'Em

An exhibit dedicated to 200 painfully awkward family photos went on display today at a Santa Monica museum.

The exhibit, which runs through July 27 at the California Heritage Museum, features images from the Awkward Family Photos website and book series of portraits, vacations, weddings and holidays.

Doug Chernack and his childhood friend Mike Bender started the website five years ago. The pair believe there is art in the cringe-worthy poor wardrobe and hairstyle choices.

"We always looked at these as their own pieces of art, and that is what culminated at the California Heritage Museum,"  Chernack told Video News West.

Some of the images appear to defy logic. In one photo, a family of five dressed completely in denim are stacked on top of one another. The piece is called "Pile of Denim."
