One of two hospitals in the Health System operated by the University of California, Los Angeles, the Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital features the city's only emergency department approved for pediatrics, and only inpatient pediatrics unit and pediatrics intensive-care unit. Other clinical services include a maternity center and family medicine programs; additionally, there are orthopaedic, spine and general medicine programs—and a nationally renowned geriatrics program.

While currently open, the newly remodeled version of the Center is due to open in mid-2011, with a North Italian architectural style that closely resembles that of the UCLA campus in Westwood. The new hospital will feature six operating rooms, a critical-care unit, an expanded inpatient pediatrics unit, all-digital imaging technology and new patient rooms with more natural light. One-quarter of the new campus will be devoted to green and open spaces.
