KKK dwindling to less than10,000 members? Not just renaming themselves the Tea Party.
Rick Langley April 24, 2014 at 12:02 pm
@Gerson Goldstein You can say God in school, just like the Klan can say what they wish. SchoolsRead More can't force God on kids. You don't seem to understand the 1st Amendment.

I don't disagree with you that we're becoming less and less a free country but it's wrong to blameRead More democrats alone. It wasn't dems alone that passed the patriot act. It hasn't been dems alone that have been re-uping it since it was passed the first time. On how bad Hillary will be as a president. Every president is bad in some ways. Reagan raised taxes more than a dozen times. Bush took us to war on two fronts with no way to pay for it. Clinton signed DOMA and DADT. Obama gave away the farm in order to get the Affordable Care Act passed. Papa Bush said that atheists shouldn't be considered Americans. Sure Hillary will be a bad president in some ways.... they are all bad in some way. I can tell you this much though, any president is going to be a worse president when the publicly stated goal of the opposition is to obstruct that president at any and all opportunities. The dems did it to Bush. The republican'ts are doing it to Obama. It's like Palestine and Israel, they'll fight to the death out of spite and habit, neither one of them knowing which one threw the first punch and not caring because winning is the only goal. What America needs are citizens that go into government for the good of the country instead of the good of their party.
Michael Hipp April 24, 2014 at 12:03 pm
Oh, one last point on your last post B. Dub. "Hillary presidency combined with a DemocraticRead More Congress." Ain't gonna happen. Republicant's have gerrymandered the states to absolute death. They have the House for the foreseeable future and they have a good chance at getting the Senate. I can't guarantee you who's going to win in 2016 but I can very well guarantee you that no one party will take executive and legislative branches, both.

this "to me" is not funny, the swat teams are used for serious issues, hostage taking,Read More etc. to have a swat team called to a home behind a video game is stupid, these swat members are trained to save lives, etc. to be called to a home behind a video game is not funny, what happens if a REAL call comes in and swat is needed there, I hope they catch the idiot that called swat and he gets what he/she deserves

In what part of town is her home? A good reason why the wearing of hooded sweatshirts should beRead More forbidden because (1) people with hooded tops are scary to the public, especially to children, and (2) it makes it harder on the Police to track them down.

I thought there was already a department called "Child Protective Services." Hmm are theyRead More disbanding this inept group after they prosecute all the criminal activity of neglect and disregard amongst themselves and starting a new "get it right" group. Naw didn't think so. Just another way gov't will fleece the public by adding another tier of bureaucracy that will take years to evolve where they'll once again tell you and me they're still earning from their mistakes. My answer: No. Fire the inept. Prosecute those who committed criminal acts within their job; hold the rest accountable to protect those they are chartered to protect

DCFS- the Department of Children and Family Services. The department has lots of issues- but at theRead More same time there are a lot of hard workers who care deeply about what they do. The department administration needs to better support the workers so they CAN do their jobs. The challenge lies in changing the way the department is run- more case workers will help immensely- that will be implemented by Fall. But the case workers need to be trained in organizational skills (filing etc.- sounds mundane but critical when you do not want children to get lost in the shuffle).

I believe it is time for action, not further study. It is time for respect, not dismissiveness.Read More The Commission unanimously concluded that a "State of Emergency" exists in the current child protection system. Reform will only take as long or as little time as 3 votes on the Board of Supervisors decide it will take. If elected to serve the 3rd District, I will implement the recommendations made by the Blue Ribbon task force, and not ask for yet another study. The report uncovers the fact that 4 months have transpired since the Commission issued its interim recommendation which everyone agreed was both urgent and able to be implemented with current resources - - - the recommendation that medical screening exams should be performed on detained children under the age of one. (see p. 12) How could the Board fail to act at least on this one simple recommendation? LA County Supervisors can use their discretionary funds to implement the hiring of a Child Welfare Chief/Czar before more innocent children become the next victims. LA County voters will be given the opportunity to vote for 2 new Supervisors in the June primary and in November this year. I hope and pray that the newly elected Supervisors will make protecting children a priority.

The problem is the school board. It is controlled by candidates supported by Santa Monicans forRead More Renters Rights. The criteria for endorsement by SMRR is support for building low income rental housing and funding for regional social service programs. Management or financial backgrounds are not relevant. We need to start by replacing the School Board

This entire incident is unfortunate and reflects poor judgement on everyone's part. Thankfully, noRead More one was killed or seriously injured. Instead of continuing to point fingers, it's time to figure out the best protocol for removing disruptive students from the classroom without engaging in combat. At the start of each school year each student, teacher, parent and all school employees on every level must receive a copy of the protocol to read and sign. Failure to sign and/or comply----- you are out on your ass. Do not pass Go. Do not collect $100.
Everyday Mathematics is just one of the programs that makes a heck of a lot of $ off of the millions of textbooks sold to schools that teach to the 'Core.' The Common Core isn't just restricting for teachers & students, it's lining people's pockets.

FOR THOSE WHO LIKE AMAZON PRIME OVER NETFLIX: Here's an interesting article from today (23 Apr 2014)Read More about how Amazon Prime just got HBO to stream at least some of its older content, plus "HBO GO," to Amazon's new Fire TV box, thereby making NetFlix upset because NetFlix (nor any other streaming service, including HULU) has never been able to get any HBO content; and so Amazon has scored a real coup! Yeah it's great for those of us with our business in downtown SM. All this congestion for a trainRead More that most Santa Monican's didn't want in the first place. I grew up here and know so many people here of them including several SMPD officers I know and not one of them wanted this thing, yet here we are our streets blocked a good restaurant gone all for this ridiculous Expo.
