It took three years to get the award, so I have to assume Macerich paid some cash for a mention inRead More 2013. We had a perfect Gehry designed mall who's only fault was it never used the ocean views for placement of restaurants. I'm sorry Frank but the parking structure had the best ocean views in Santa Monica. I have only been to the "new" S.M. place during the week, it is an empty grey blob. Unlike "The Grove" in West Hollywood that has a vitality even on week days. In the end this grey blob will be demolished, let's do it now and build some lacking green space in Santa Monica.

I have been a resident for more than 30 years and I agree 100% with Fred!

One lawyer = 50 residents to the city. They listen to the lawyers in their suits and politely acceptRead More the reaming they offer we residents. They can toss a crumb to the city and it's down on the ground scooping it up. A few polite questions is all these sharks have to face. If they had street smarts they'd get every dime out of the billionaire developers and solve our the city's financial woes instantly.
daniel rodriguez May 23, 2013 at 07:49 am
I am opposed to some of these overwhelming projects being proposed but the bigger issue is demandingRead More that the government clearly reflect the wishes of the residents concerning what they want their city to become. While the developers have hired teams of professionals to work at the Council to push their plans through, ultimately the residents' voices must prevail.
The proposed design of the Miramar Hotel project.
Joanne May 23, 2013 at 09:31 am
j pena, there is one...the Neighborhood Council which meets monthly and is very active. Contact yourRead More neighborhood group president and get info on how to be involved. The bigger the numbers of residents involved, the louder the voice!
j pena May 23, 2013 at 09:23 am
Joanne I wish that there was a group for all of our neighborhood organizations. Who has the skillsRead More to organize this -? I don't see anyone stepping up. It's time that we organize. It's so true that we think about our neighborhoods and don't know what others suffer. Even one meeting of all the groups would show we're a force here. Plus, more people would join.
Joanne May 23, 2013 at 09:15 am
Welcome aboard NOMA! The other neighborhoods have been suffering these quality of life issues forRead More many years now and welcome more voices to help "stop the madness".
Jill May 8, 2013 at 07:02 pm
I think there is a little propaganda going on here via Santa Monica Place. Such a powerful draw thatRead More there is all these empty shops just waiting for an upscale retailer to fight over?. I see tax breaks, we are probably paying for "kate Spade" to move into the Pelican Bay of shopping malls. A friend and I recentley walked up Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hiils, wandered in and out of Ralph Loren, and all the other high end retailers and were struck over the lack of people buying a bag for thousands of dollars. I think Pelican Bay sorry Santa Monica Place is a being supported by taxpayers. The photo of an empty concrete mass in your story proves my point.

Paul - You may recall that wealthy Asians bought up expensive condos during the real estate boom.Read More Many native Californians were furious. Then the real estate market tanked. All investors lost a lot of money, especially Asian speculators. If it happened once, it will happen again.....this time it will be commercial real estate. BTW, Hong Kong is a fantastic city for sophisticated food lovers and black belt shoppers. Please, no more ethnocentric comments. I know you are above that.
Paul S May 7, 2013 at 06:12 pm
Gross- but since Chinese money is buying Santa Monica and supporting the political agenda of so manyRead More who want long careers - we will get what they want - and that is Gucci, Hermes, Prada- etc - basically we are sold out and owned and being turned into a cross between Tech Central- and Beverly Hills- our wonderful town is over- only one way to stop it- RECALL the bought out 4 council members- it's not scary - it's easy- don't let them waste your energy on one issue or another- the real plans for downtown are not being told- we will be Hong Kong soon- I never go downtown ever- or to Montana anymore- traffic- boring retailers - we have lost our authenticity - the las thing I care about is materialism- that is all the rich care about and they own us- let's stop them- they are also running around buying for cash all the rental properties they can to tear them down and build condos- all SE Asian money - ALL CASH

Just checked the menu. Looks like you can get a big goopy greasy plate of slop 24 hours a day.Read More Blech!

Whoopie another chain..what an original a city we aren't.
Adrian Reynolds May 3, 2013 at 04:35 pm
That's all Santa Monica needs, another restaurant chain.
mimi May 1, 2013 at 09:37 pm
Lynn - Good point. It appears the buyers intend to keep the original exterior but gut the interior.Read More It would make a great storage facility with individual units of various size.. It also stands to reason the Santa Monica Airport could be next on the casualty list, especially if people refuse to pay the fee increase. Theoretically, the city can sell the airport if it isn't cost effective. I believe it will always continue to remain an airport. So the real question is ownership. If not the city of Santa Monica, than who?
Lynn W May 1, 2013 at 08:02 pm
Why would a foreign-funded investment company have its "primary reason for purchase is toRead More conserve this cultural landmark..." (Which happens to be, like the doomed Civic Auditorium and Criterion theatre, on prime real estate for developers with all that cash they've got to use somewhere.) Hey, Mimi, nobody wants a bridge when we've got a whole town being sold for promises that aren't kept.
mimi May 1, 2013 at 02:42 pm
I got a bridge for sale.....cheap.

There are many people with the same problem. It is very difficult today to create a resume that willRead More catch the attention of the hiring managers. Some of the tips I would like to recommend are: - Keep it short (Don’t write too long, a resume should not be longer than 2 pages in order to be readable). - Indicate key points (Don’t list day to day responsibilities because most of the hiring managers want to see only what you have achieved). - Numerically indicate all your achievements and responsibilities ( For example : if you manage a group of people you should mention how big that group was or if you manage to increase sales mention percentage ) - If you was a good student and had good GPA you will use that in your resume as well - Avoid using “I”, “he”, and “she”. Instead, try to start each bullet point with an action verb. For example: Performed data entry I hope this will help but if you want to find out more will be better to find out more on one of the resume builder sites. I personally use http://resumecompanion.com/ to get more tips because they have a lot of free templates and examples how resume schould look

Come look at Pluralistic #1 Elementary Private School Euclid/ Broadway - the Grand Prize Winner ofRead More the Sustainability Award! The City can give them another award- Best Shrine to an egomaniac educator!
Tay uhler April 25, 2013 at 08:36 pm
Why don't you look at the corner of Euclid and Broadway? 7 days a week an animated sign along withRead More huge lit signs into the night larger and brighter than Santa Monica Place, the Pier, SMC, and other public or private schools. . PS #1 private school reminding the neighbors and residents what disregard they have for the quality of their lives. Eye level signs larger than AMC7 theater complex. WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON? Beam me up Scotty! WHO GOT THIS PASSED? $$$$$$$$$$
roxy April 25, 2013 at 04:20 pm
I understand the need for Code Compliance but this is all about making the City money and not aboutRead More the businesses. In a time where the State is broke and country is in the process of recovering from an economic collapse the Businesses need to do what they can to advertise and attract customers; this just hurts the Businesses even more.
Paul S April 19, 2013 at 07:14 pm
These cars are great and all over Europe for a long long time- we are so far behind- and they areRead More tough too- safer than most cars on the road
michael derek mccoy April 24, 2013 at 07:31 pm
Great asset to Santa Monica. The area around the new store, reflects the purchasing power of it'sRead More customers. They can certainly afford to shop here.
Mara T April 19, 2013 at 07:00 pm
oh my... another chain...
mimi April 19, 2013 at 02:10 pm
Watch out Whole Foods! Here comes your competition.
mimi April 19, 2013 at 02:21 pm
They have lost a huge amount of money in the USA. It seems that some other group has purchased theRead More rights to operate the Fresh & Easy franchise on this side of the pond.
Paul S April 19, 2013 at 02:13 am
Ted - I just got an email - like an hour ago - that they are not- how odd
carla April 19, 2013 at 12:20 am
Well, at least we can blow our paychecks at the new, upscale Bristol Farms at Berkeley and Wilshire.Read More God forbid we get an "affordable" market like Fresh & Easy!
mimi April 10, 2013 at 01:34 pm
Both chefs are excellent. I was sorry to see Chris leave Whist. The food hasn't been the same sinceRead More his departure. I am not a fan of exclusivity --- be it clubs or restaurants. Didn't we get our fill of sororities and fraternities when we were in high school and college? It will be interesting to see if they succeed in Santa Monica. It's never a good sign when the chef exits shortly after arrival and opening of the club.

I am absolutely certain that people on this board are smarter than I am in any case, credit given orRead More not. I am full of admiration for the immediate neighbors of this hotel, who are trying to take action--yes, it is their legal right to do so--before it is too late. They are behaving as good citizens should; communicating with their neighbors, presenting the issue, and trying to organize the community. Nothing dishonest or disingenuous in that; they should be commended for their efforts.
mimi April 9, 2013 at 07:10 pm
SMR - People reading this board are a lot smarter than you give them credit. They realize yourRead More comments are disingenuous, if not dishonest. My only interest, which you choose not to believe, is to give the hotel a fair chance before you tar and feather the owner. I would do the same for you if you opened a business and your neighbors gave you a hard time just because they had the legal right to do so.
Paul S April 9, 2013 at 06:33 pm
Beach Mama, My condolences- it was the hardest thing I've ever been through- glad she got to seeRead More some peaceful vision instead of the misery most face- hard time
KevinFl March 31, 2013 at 02:27 pm
So they are closing a cinema and replacing it with retail, and they are closing a parking structureRead More and replacing it with a cinema. So in effect they are adding a huge retail space and losing a parking structure. I submit that this is SMCC planning and zoning idiocy.
mimi March 30, 2013 at 12:50 pm
I agree. Let's hope the exterior will be preserved without architectural changes.
Mei Ling March 30, 2013 at 12:24 pm
Always thought it was rather silly to have 2 AMC's across the street from one another. But this oneRead More was classic in design.
Glenn E Grab May 13, 2013 at 11:25 am
no, greg, that's the point that you made up.....my point is that the law and common sense willRead More prevail and the airport will stay open... and that you and the rest of the misguided, self-righteous loonies will find another cause....may I suggest male bovine feces disposal, you've certainly created a lot of it
S A May 13, 2013 at 05:16 am
I suppose it depends on your definition of "horrendous" environmental effects. As iRead More mentioned before, SMO could start selling unleaded fuel but you and the city choose not to promote that solution. Regardless, the industry is phasing it out so problem solved so enough... Car accidents kill people every day in CA at a much, much ,much higher rate then airplanes but you don't seem to be concerned about replacing the airport with more roads & intersections. The city and the state have a lot budget problems. There are other ways to solve them without destroying the airport. And no matter how you spin the numbers, the fact is that SMO provides a large economic stimulus to the city. Maybe 240M or maybe less but certainly enough to cover the relatively small financial support it gets from the city. If it bothers you so much then pull the financial support, the airport can fund itself. You just want the airport shut down. Your reasons are not relevant.
Greg Fry May 12, 2013 at 08:42 pm
Glenn, so your point is that power and influence may have loaded the dice against any fair hearing?Read More Amazing the things that you--and others of your kind--appeal to!
mimi April 20, 2013 at 01:02 pm
Exactly my own sentiments.
Jasmine April 19, 2013 at 08:49 pm
By requiring a valet and off-street parking arrangement, it seems the City has provided a wise andRead More reasonable solution. The city receives tax revenue from these establishments, and it is in everyone in the community's best interest to have thriving businesses throughout. Not only do they provide goods and services to customers, but also they provide jobs and generate tax revenue which fund programs for those whom cannot do for themselves and require government aid. People who chose to live within one or two blocks from a commercial street should not have the right to curtail commercial business on that street. (Yes, I recognize that years ago the commercial business at that location operated only during daytime hours. -- This sort of change is the risk one takes when choosing to live so close to a commercial zone.)
mimi April 19, 2013 at 02:07 pm
I am pleased that a reasonable compromise was reached with the neighborhood residents, except forRead More one. Hopefully, she will come around once the restaurant has opened.
Laurel Rosen April 18, 2013 at 01:51 pm
Tiato restaurant was just honored with the Santa Monica Chambers 2013 Sustainable Quality AwardsRead More grand prize for being a role model of sustainability in our community. The An family runs a successful professional business and they have proven to be role models in many different areas.. I wish them continued great success.
mimi April 18, 2013 at 12:27 pm
I am pleased that an agreement was reached that alleviates concerns held by neighborhood residents.Read More Hopefully, Tiato will serve as the role model in other SM neighborhoods.

I agree that making the alcohol the central component attracts the wrong kind of people, I myselfRead More was amazed at the constant gum residue on the sidewalk in front of The Parlor. They had to sand-blast it off periodically, but it's still there now. I hope that handling the parking off-site works out. I'd like to see a nice restaurant there, it is within walking distance for many. This property has been problematic since I moved here in 1994 and it was a dinner theater / opera house. Mostly closed, rarely open. Has a lot of potential, though. Hope this Japanese steakhouse works out.
Mary McGrath April 1, 2013 at 03:18 pm
Thank you for your feedback Harry....the restaurant has been well-received. Santa Monica is a bit ofRead More a challenge with the traffic, so I suggest going during the week if you want to avoid some of that.
Harry Chauncy April 1, 2013 at 03:05 pm
I haven't eaten at Mercado yet, but the reputation is good an I am sure it is a fine restaurant. IRead More do take exception to the review which wreaks of insipid local boosterism. Readers (if not advertisers) would be better served by a less flowery and more matter--of-fact and honest review. Frankly, I didn't believe the review and went to Yelp and Chowhound to see that people do actually think it's a good place. Also to Mercado- it would be nice to see prices in your online menu.
Dan Charney March 20, 2013 at 05:40 am
Yes- and all the consultants and all the consultants men won't give two ditties about Santa MonicaRead More again - rape and pillage- must be our fault- they marched in here like an unattractive procurement person with a big checkbook and a lot of dirty tricks - the rest is all cr--- the real issue is - don't let them violate laws to do any of it- and don't buy the BS from these developer backed consultants

Does he have a petition to sign? Does anyone know the landlord? We certainly can convince StarbucksRead More we'll picket every day and try to get no one to patronize a store that would force someone else out of business. I just can't imagine the kind of people who would do business with someone for 25 years and let him know his business is closing by posting notices about the new owner on the window.
