I am delighted they won first prize. I watched their short films earlier this year on this veryRead More website. They were excellent and deserving of the recognition. I applaud all of the SMC staff for their involvement and participation in training aspiring film makers. It is not necessary to go to UCLA or USC film school in order to learn the craft.

Every high school in this country needs a "scared straight" car safety program.

My daughter, Olivia CoriaSoria, a SaMo Senior participated along w/her friends to show cause nRead More effects of actions n choices we make in life n to give her fellow students a heads up! I am very proud of her maturity, awareness, and common logic! The event should seriously be expanded to include other schools, and traffic violators! Anna Corral-CoriaSoria Santa Monica Mom/Resident

This should be in all schools across the nation. I've always felt that if teenagers went to aRead More morgue and saw the aftermath of accidents and drug abuse, that they might be very much influenced to want to stay alive and not cause grief to their families.

It's correct the song is "to" and the show is "of" the stars.

It's "Stairway *TO* the Stars", not "...of the Stars".... like the song.

Arthur...While you might not believe in marriage equality the fact is that everyone is equal andRead More deserves the same rights. The tide is changing as that was shown in the election. Someones rights should not be put up to public vote. It has nothing to do with religion or the Bible and everything to do with life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I have been legally married in California for going on 5 years (together for 12 years) now and I would like to know how my marriage to my wife has impacted your life? If you consider that gay relationships are just "sexual arrangements" you are way off base.

For those who are interested in the truth about blacks and the GOP, please visit:Read More http://www.thefrontpageonline.com/articles1-12410/GOPHistoryIsRepleteWithSupportofBlackIdeals I am tired of Democratic leaders distorting the true story.
Arthur Christopher Schaper February 26, 2013 at 08:00 pm
I do not believe in "marriage equality" -- that is not a statement born of bigotry, but aRead More statement born of truth, tradition, and trust that the coupling of one man and one woman is the true "progressive" stance. Before that, people engaged in all kinds of sexual arrangements, with diverse and deleterious consequences. Indeed, marriage should have remained a private matter. The government should never have gotten involved in marriage in the first place.

Wow. We have some tall old trees near our houses in this development. Time to get them checked byRead More an arborist.

It is true that not all churches use hate speech. I don't consider WBC a church because theirRead More agenda is more like an activist group. I don't think anyone here is condemning God or the Bible. I am curious however as to where "a proper discussion about homosexuality" fits in here.
Arthur Christopher Schaper February 25, 2013 at 06:51 pm
It is wrong to condemn all churches because of the "hate speech" of one group. It is alsoRead More wrong to condemn God, the Bible, and a proper discussion about homosexuality because of the poor and uncivil affront of one group.

Westboro still has its tax deduction as a church. Churches--unlike other non-profits--don't have toRead More pay even property taxes.
Brenda Barnes February 22, 2013 at 11:05 pm
I've noticed how angry they always look. I think they do themselves more harm than good, sinceRead More hardly anyone is foolish enough to believe such anger and hate is Christian. The most important thing to me is people who spread hate should lose their tax exemption, as Dan said. I know gay kids at Samo, and not all seem secure enough to take this kind of hate being directed at them for how they were born. Besides, it's against California law to encourage violence against people because of their gender or sexual orientation. People who oppose Westboro are not equal to this hate-crime encouraging group--they are superior in rights, according to the law. Therefore, the police should rein in Westboro the way they did Occupy, which was not violating any law.

what happened to "it is a free country" so long as one obeys the law. Both sides. TheyRead More have a right to show up, others have a right to counter show up. Don't get worked up. Diversity in all manner is good.

Can we have a group of the homeless do a mass panhandle of them?

It was the college's project, not the city's. The college said it used Measure AA funds, a 2008 bondRead More measure (http://www.smartvoter.org/2008/11/04/ca/la/meas/AA/).

Wait, The City of Santa Monica just put those in to be nice? LOL Wait till they figure out a way toRead More charge for those spaces!

Love these clips & photos. I hope the SMC students will make more mini documentaries. They haveRead More done a wonderful job. Kudos to the person(s) who came up with this creative idea.

Speaking from personal experiences as both a student and an employee of Santa Monica College, I'veRead More found that the college police are the most respectful and friendly/approachable police department I've ever had contact with. They are visible, and always interacting with students. The actions of one officer does not reflect the entire department, I think it's important we don't make that mistake. It is refreshing to learn that the officer has resigned.

Agreed. Any advanced alien race reading this would happily skip this planet. Perhaps in the futureRead More this thread may be a teaching tool showing the discord, arrogance and ignorance of 21st century Americans. Angry rantings, most displaying the logic of children. Puke

David, it is not as far fetched as you might believe. I'm simply looking at what those in power inRead More prewar Europe did and stating that I'm not going to allow mankind to repeat those mistakes here in America. Every 60 or 70 years, we simply forget what happened and then repeat the same mistakes that earlier generations made.

Max The Paper Boy, you are correct, I am not your voice... I am the voice of the voiceless! fyi,Read More these are the top contributors/PAC to this year's National Election. The NRA is not among them. They are: Friends of John Boehner,RepublicanGovernors Assn,Club for Growth,EMILY's List,League of Conservation,FreedomWorks,Every Republican Is Crucial PAC,Arcus Foundation,Americans for Limited Government,Freedom Project,Susan B Anthony List,Senate Conservatives Fund,Hoyer for Congress,Friends of Jeb Hensarling,Nancy Pelosi for Congress,Blue Dog PAC,AmeriPAC: The Fund for a Greater America,Majority Cmte PAC,Votesane PAC,Environment America... The NRA makes it influence known primarily through campaign donations. In 2012 they spent a little over 2 million dollars. $1,845,000 of that came from The NRA itself, $360,000 came from it's subsidiary, NRA Institute for Legislative Action. The total amount spent lobbying for gun rights was only $5,535,651 for 2012. In a National Election that cost ran into the billions! Not everyone who supports The NRA is a dues paying member. Not all of us are even gun owners. We support the Right To Bear Arms just the same.
