To the immediate north of the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, the Santa Monica Civic Center is the site of aMore major redevelopment effort by the city. An 11.3-acre portion of the property was purchased by the Rand Corportation, across 4th Street to the west.

The Civic Center Specific Plan, which was adopted on June 28, 2005, encompasses the area bordered by Pico Boulevard, 4th Street, Ocean Ave. and Colorado Avenue. The area will become, after the decades-long redevelopment, a locus for community gatherings and major civic events.

Located just a few blocks from the Pacific Ocean, the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium has hosted the Academy Awards (fromMore 1961 - 68); concerts by Bob Dylan, Lenny Kravitz and other music legends; and countless exhibitions and trade shows. "The Civic," as it's commonly known, is also home to the Santa Monica Symphony. It features a 27,168-square-foot exhibit space and has a seating capacity of 3,000; the indoor facility can hold a maximum of 149 booths, while an additional 101 booths can be accommodated with tents on the front lawn and east and west patios.
