The Planning Commission is responsible for promoting the health, safety and general welfare of the community of SantaMore Monica. It has seven members who serve four-year terms. Members must be residents of Santa Monica and are not allowed to hold another paid position in the city government. Among the commission's roles are helping to determine the most appropriate use of land in the city, preventing overpopulation, alleviating street congestion and ensuring adequate spaces for air and light. The commission is mandated to, among other duties, make recommendations regarding proposed public works and rebuilding of parts of the city, make recommendations to the City Council regarding changes to the city's Master Plan and exercise control over land subdivisions.
