California Heritage Museum

Built in 1894 for Roy Jones, son of Santa Monica's founder, Sen. John Jones, this landmark building opened as a museumMore in 1980. In addition to a permanent collection that features historic photographs and decorative arts, the Heritage Museum presents special exhibits focusing on California artists and artisans. The real star of this collection is the 1894 Victorian house the museum occupies. The interior has been beautifully restored to represent four decades of design.

More than 600,000 photos and 7,000 original property deeds from the Los Angeles County Recorder are included in the collection.</p> <p>The museum - which opened its city-provided permanent location on October 24, 2010 - also houses a research library that is open to the public on an appointment basis. It hosts free docent-led tours and additional programs.</p> <p>The Santa Monica History Museum has been operating since 1975, serving to preserve the history of the city. It was previously known as the Santa Monica Historical Society.</p>

The merry-go-round is one of the few surviving all-wooden carousels in the world—less than 70 continue to operate today. The fanciful and elegant old machine, with its painted ponies and chariots, lights, brass poles and mirrors, turns as smoothly now as ever thanks to constant care and maintenance.
