Get Connected! A Free Technology Fair for Older Adults

As our society adjusts into an E-era, where most common services are available electronically, it is essential that everyone keep up on emerging technology, understand how to manage personal business matters online and use the Internet and e-mail.

Kids these days, or rather the I-Generation, learn to use an electronic device before they can walk. But for adults 50+, technology has been like learning a new language.  While many of us born before 1980 have changed our communication, commerce and lifestyle habits, there is a large sector of older adults that struggle. They may avoid jumping on the e-wagon because it is too complicated, too overwhelming.

Recognizing the importance of bridging the digital divide, the Commission for the Senior Community, the Santa Monica Public Library and the Older Adult Task Force, a consortium of over 50 organizations committed to providing outstanding services to older adults in Santa Monica and neighboring areas, is hosting a FREE technology fair on Saturday, May 17, 2014 from 10 am to 2 pm at the Santa Monica Public Library. The event will provide a comfortable, supportive atmosphere for older adults to learn about cellphones, laptops, e-readers and more. There will be lectures for more advanced users on social media/networking, and safe online shopping. Absolute beginners will have the opportunity to attend basic computer workshops on the Internet, e-mail and using a mouse.

Information Stations will be set up for participants to learn about a variety of apps and websites on topics such as health, dating, saving money, online research, lifestyle and fitness.
