Santa Monica Locals React to School Shooting

Students and others discuss the event via social media.

Almost as soon as gunshots were heard on the Santa Monica College Campus Friday, students, staff, neighbors and others began sharing the news via social media.

First reports of the gunfire started appearing shortly after noon. Daniel Berumen, writing on Twitter at 12:06 p.m. reported "Major gunfire at Santa Monica College ... this is horrible."

About 20 minutes later, Betsy Moyer of KCRW, the Santa Monica College Internet public radio, described things as "eerie and quiet in the office while we wait to hear news. Helicopters overhead and nailbiters pacing the hallways" via Twitter.

Kajon Cermak tweeted the KCRW staff was evacuated almost two and a half hours later.

Others, like Jonathan Weber, shared they were sickened by the shootings. "This is happening way too frequently," he tweeted.

A SMC student was arrested as recently as May 16 for threats to "shoot up the school," according to an NBC report at the time.

Weber's sentiments were echoed by Heath Centazzo.

"Unreal, too sad. This crap happens too much," he tweeted.

The school, which is in the midst of final exams, left messages on Facebook letting students know the school is on lock down and they should stay off campus if they're not already there or stay indoors and out of open spaces if they're on campus. The school also wrote that all afternoon and evening finals scheduled for Friday had been canceled. The Academic Affairs office or students' instructors will be in touch with students to reschedule exams.
